Andalusian poetry is an extension of Arabic poetry in the East, and it went through two distinct stages: the stage of imitation and emulation, and the stage of innovation and creativity. During the era of the governors, Andalusian poetry closely mirrored its counterpart in the East, where poets like Jarir and Al-Farazdaq were prominent. Poetry at this time adhered to the traditional path of classical Arabic poetry, maintaining its method and addressing well-known themes and forms. However, when the Umayyad era brought stability and prosperity, the situation changed. The poets had several factors that contributed to the revival of poetry, starting with the encouragement and elevated status provided by the rulers. Furthermore, poets mingled with the indigenous people and other ethnic groups, and they drew inspiration from the beauty of nature and the signs of civilization. As a result, the poetry of Andalusia combined authenticity with the elegance of civilization, blending tradition with innovation. Andalusian poets explored most of the themes tackled by their contemporaries in the East. They composed poems of praise, satire, elegy, love, and pride.
